Golden Dust Day Gecko in Hilo

Today was the first time that I saw a golden dust day gecko in Hilo. I wanted to share this with everyone as they are an invasive species that came to Hawaii as pets and eventually became established first in Kona. It was crawling around the side of my house so I took a couple of pictures and posted them. They’re actually quite attractive, but don’t get too close to these guys because they have a mean bite. Have you seen any invasive species in your neighborhood lately?

Hawaii Invasive Species Class Blog - 1st Post

Hello!

This is the first post and the start of the invasive species blog. This blog is created for the use of students and parents as an open line of communication. The reason why we are doing this project is because invasive species affect everyone. Were I live, there are a lot of coqui frogs and they are a nuisance as they make a lot of noise. I eventually learned to drown them out and ignore them most of the time. However, when I’m on the phone, people on the other side of the line can hear them very clearly! I’m sure you’ve encountered an invasive species one way or another. Since invasive species affect all of us, we will be starting an invasive species project to find out how invasive species affect the environment and people of Hawaii.

Well that’s everything for now; I’ll be updating this blog when there’s new information. Feel free to leave comments on this blog. For more information you can also visit the class wiki at meiceria.wikispaces.com.
